What Is Beard Wax Used For?

There are a number of beard products on the UK market, and for guys with beards, a good quality balm is an important one to understand.

In its simplest form, a beard balm is simply a conditioner that you apply and then leave it to do its work. It does four main things

  1. Moisturises the skin underneath the beard
  2. Helps improve the general condition of the beard
  3. It helps soften the beard
  4. It allows you to shape your beard.

Balms will contain a variety of ingredients such a shea butter which does the softening and moisturizing job. They will also contain oils such as almond oil which helps with overall conditioning and growth. Finally it will have something like beeswax which acts as protection for the beard and helps seal in moisture.

The average price for a good quality balm is around £13-£15, and you can pay up to £20 for one with high end ingredients. At the lower end you can pick a cheaper one up for around £10.

Beard Wax Buyer's Guide

We always like to write a full buyer's guide, which we believe is especially helpful for any new buyer. Beard waxes can get complex so we have tried to make sense of the features below.

Holding Strength - These can range from light through to medium and all the way to extra strong. They strength you want will really depend on the style you want to have and the texture of your facial hair. In reality quite a few men have to try different strengths to discover which one works best for them.

Ingredient Quality - We recommend buying a wax that contains natural oils, beeswax, and butter. These are natural ingredients and safer than using anything chemical anywhere near your skin.

Colour Matching - these do come in different colours so make sure to pick one as close to your beard colour as possible.

Wax Scent - something that always divides opinion. Our advice is to look for light scented products rather than heavier smells. Again this very much will come down to personal choice.

Beard Wax vs Beard Balms vs Beard Butters

Is there really that much of a difference between waxes, balms and butters? The truth is there is not a great deal of difference at all, though there are some minor ones, which we think are worth knowing.

In the actual beard wax products, different waxes are used by different manufacturers. These include:

  • Candelilia Wax
  • Beeswax
  • Jojoba wax
  • Beard balm - this is a conditioner that is primarily used to style your beard. Beard balm is a mixture of both oil and butter. Balms are best used on beards shorter than 4 inches or on longer beards to get a strong hold
  • Beard wax - this wax is useful for controlling rugged whiskers and controlling fly away hair and for styling your beard Beard Wax is much harder than balm and as such is used to style the beard.

Beard butters don't really sell that much in the UK. They are very similar to waxes and balms and they simply have a higher concentration of butter.

Beard Wax vs Beard Oil

Beard oils are still the most popular choice to have and maintain a healthy beard. Beard oils help nourish the beard and encourage healthy growth. Beard wax is more about styling the beard and holding the beard and that is the key difference.

Popular oils we have shown below.

  • Meadow foam seed oil
  • Black seed oil
  • Coconut oil
  • Palm oil
  • Peach kernel oil

What Butters Are Used in Beard Wax?

Different butters are used by different manufacturers. These include:

  • Shea butter
  • Cocoa butter
  • Avocado butter

How to Apply Beard Wax

List of Steps

Step 1 - Prepare the beard

Before applying a wax, make sure the beard is dry and clean.

Step 2 - Prepare the Wax

The majority of people prefer to slightly warm the wax, others just use straight from the tin. By gently warming first between your fingers you will get a better result, than trying to massage in hard wax straight from the tin. Some people will use a hair dryer to soften it, but don't overdo this as you don't want to get it to a liquid state.

Step 3 - Apply the wax

Place some wax in your hand and apply to one side of your beard. Using your fingers gently massage it in until you are happy with the results. Use a beard comb to style and shape it to your needs. Then repeat for the other side of your beard.

How to Remove Beard Wax

Like any hair product using it will cause a build up of that particular product. Beard wax is no different and if used regularly can start to block up pores. We recommend washing it out at the end of the day as it doesn't take long. Always use a beard wash or beard shampoo to wash it out and don't use soap and hot water.

Leave the wash in for 3-5 minutes to let it do its work. Then comb through with a beard comb and the job is done. Some guys also like to add a beard conditioner and leave that overnight.

Hopefully we have explained exactly what bread wax is and how it is used. We have more information on the many beard products available on the UK market, which you can read by clicking here.
