Best Hair Clippers for Kids UK Reviews

Let's face it, cutting your child's hair at home can be a daunting task. Wriggling bodies, fidgety hands, and the fear of accidental nicks can turn a simple trim into a stressful experience for both parent and child. We have all been there. However, there's a solution! Kid-specific hair clippers can be a game-changer. These clippers are designed with your little one in mind, offering features like:

  • Quiet operation - Loud buzzing can be scary for children, making them more likely to move around. Quiet clippers create a calmer environment for a smoother haircut and make your life a great deal easier
  • Safety features - Rounded blades and adjustable cutting lengths minimise the risk of nicks and uneven cuts, giving you peace of mind.

This article is here to help you navigate the world of kid-friendly hair clippers. I'll explore the key features to consider, review some of the top contenders available in the UK for 2024, and guide you towards finding the perfect clippers for a stress-free haircutting experience for your entire family.

Key Considerations When Buying Hair Clippers for Kids

Choosing the right hair clippers for your child is all about creating a comfortable and safe experience for everyone involved. Here are the main factors I think you should consider before buying any clippers:

Age

  • Toddlers - For the wiggliest of clients, make sure the clippers have a very quiet operation to reduce fidgeting. Consider clippers with a lightweight design for easier handling by you.
  • Older Children - As your child becomes more patient, noise level might be less of a concern. Features like adjustable cutting lengths and a wider range of guard attachments become more important for achieving desired hairstyles. You know how fussy they can be.

Hair Type

  • Thin Hair - Look for clippers with ceramic or titanium blades that offer a closer cut without pulling at the hair.
  • Thick Hair - Clippers with a powerful motor will handle thicker hair with ease. Stainless steel blades are also a good choice for their durability.
  • Curly Hair - Prioritise adjustable cutting lengths for more control and to avoid accidental shaving of precious curls. Look for clippers with ceramic blades that tend to glide through curly hair more smoothly.

Safety Always

  • Rounded Blades - This is truly a non-negotiable feature to have! Rounded blades minimize the risk of nicks and scrapes, especially important for a squirmy child.
  • Adjustable Cutting Lengths - This allows for gradual trimming and reduces the chance of accidental shaving.
  • Comb Guards - These attach to the blades and provide a set cutting length, offering additional control and preventing overly short cuts.

The most important thing to consider is that the clippers are safe and sound. Many adult clippers have very sharp blades which are of course needed to cut through very fine hairs. They do however have what are called flat blades and if care is not taken, then they can nip the skin.

That is painful and certainly something that you would never want to happen to a child. So although the blades on children's clippers are also sharp, the manufacturers round the edges of these, and that eliminates the risk of any nips and cuts. All of the ones we have shown on the list above meet that important criteria.

Make Your Life Easier

  • Weight and Grip - Lightweight clippers are easier for you to control and maneuver, especially when wrangling with a restless child. A comfortable grip for you is also important for maintaining control.
  • Cordless vs. Corded - Cordless clippers offer greater freedom of movement, which can be helpful for a wiggly child. However, corded clippers often have a more powerful motor. Consider your needs and those of your child.
  • Easy Cleaning - Look for clippers with detachable blades for easy cleaning. Some clippers are even waterproof for quick rinsing.

The Peaceful Life

As I mentioned earlier, quiet operation is a top priority for younger children and a smoother haircutting experience for everyone. Look for clippers with decibel level ratings in the product descriptions. The noise of clippers, especially when they get close to the ears can make children nervous. Hey I am an adult and I don't like the sound of them either. So another key feature of children's clippers is to keep them as quiet as possible.

All clippers use a motor and blades do rub together, so there will always be some noise. Again the manufacturers of children specific clippers are aware of this, and make their clippers as quiet as they possibly can.

Low Vibration

For any child with sensory issues or for kids with autism, vibration can be quite upsetting. All hair clippers vibrate simply because of the way they are made, and the fact that blades do have to move. Most kid's clippers will try and reduce this to as low as possible without losing the power of the clippers.

By considering the above factors, you'll be well on your way to choosing the perfect pair of kid-friendly hair clippers for a stress-free haircutting experience for you and your little one.

Tips for Cutting Children's Hair

We are going to offer a few tips here that will make cutting your kid's hair a great deal easier.

  1. Try not to turn it into an event - it is a lot easier if Dad is getting his hair done and then the child goes next. That way you can remove the drama and also help to negate the fear factor.
  2. During the actual cutting, keep your other hand lightly on the top of their head. It gives them reassurance and also helps keep the head still.
  3. Let them play with the blade guides. These are not sharp and they can easily be turned into all sorts of toys. My grandson can easily turn a plastic blade into a munching monster, or a scoop for a digger very easily indeed.
  4. Don't cut their hair when it is wet. They have probably just has their hair washed and will not be in the best of moods. Trying to plonk them in a chair after that is not a great idea. It is also harder to use hair clippers on wet hair.
  5. For older kids, they will likely need some encouragement. There are some very good YouTube videos of where barbers create some cool looking haircuts, with a set of clippers. Try watching those with them.
  6. Take the stress out of the situation by having the TV on, or something similar like music. Anything that distracts them from that task in hand is a great idea.

Hopefully we have provided you with enough information to be able to help you decide on which hair clippers are the best choice for your children.

Hair Clippers for Kids FAQ

What age can you use clippers on a child?

We would recommend starting to use hair clippers after your child is around 1 year old. There really is no need to use clippers on a baby, unless there is exceptional hair growth. We would also suggest taking really young children to a hair salon or barbers first and allow experts to make that first cut. It also helps get kids used to the sound of the clippers.

Can You Use Clippers on a Toddler?

Most toddlers will not need their first haircut until they are around 12-18 months. There will be a few exceptions to this rule, but generally speaking, this is the ideal time. Most toddlers will not like this first experience, especially if you take them to a hairdresser or barber.

It is almost always a better idea to try this at home in a location and atmosphere they are used to. We would recommend doing this when both you and your toddler are relaxed. Begin with using scissors and then move to clippers after they get used to those.

In the ideal world, if there is an older sibling getting their hair cut, then allow the toddler to watch so as they know there is nothing to worry about.

Electric Shavers

Philips Shaver 3000 Series UK Review

Thanks for taking your time to read our reviews of the Philips 3000 electric shavers. The Philips brand offer various ranges of electric shavers and they mainly call them by numbers. To date they have a 3,000, 5,000, 7,000 and 9,000 range of shavers.

Their 3000 range is their oldest range of shavers that are still being manufactured and sold on the UK market. Within that range they have a couple of electric shavers with the following model numbers: S3233/52 and 3333/54. There are a couple of other models but they have little to no sales shown against them so we have left them out and we focus on the two models mentioned as they still sell pretty well in the UK.

Philips Shaver Series 3000 Dry and Wet Electric Shaver

(Model S3233/52)

Philips Shaver Series 3000 Dry And Wet Electric Shaver (Model S3233/52), Shiny Black, 2 Pin Bathroom Plug

This remains one of the biggest selling shavers online and it is popular as it is just a very good quality razor

It is classed as a cordless shaver so doesn't need to be plugged in to use it

It takes an hour to charge the shaver and that will give you an hour's worth of shaving time - there is also a quick 5 minute charge which will allow you enough for one full shave - handy when you are in a hurry and the battery has gone flat

This uses a lead that plugs into the shaver to charge rather than a cradle.

It is a rotary shaver (not foil) with three heads and each head contains 9 very well engineered self-sharpening blades

The actual head of the shaver does move or flex and that allows the shaver to get around the various angles of the neck and chin

You can use this shaver to shave dry or it can also be used if you want a wet shave using a soap, cream, gel or foam.

It has a small pop-up beard trimmer.

The grip on this shaver is really comfortable and gives you a nice grip when using the shaver. The beauty of this shaver is that it is just not complicated. There is an on/off button and three small charging lights that shows the strength of the battery. These lights are also visible when charging so as you know when the charge is complete.

The head of the shaver flips open so as you can give it a quick clean. For a deeper clean you can also wash out the head to get rid of hairs and then just allow it to dry.

There is a plastic protective cap for the head that clips on and there is also a small drawstring pouch.

The choice of an electric razor is an important one, especially for those taking their first steps into the reality of shaving. The UK market is quite literally flooded with options, with every model boasting about cutting-edge features and promising an unparalleled shaving experience.

As a beginner, trying to figure out this world of choices can be overwhelming. In my comprehensive guide, I will clearly explain the intricacies of selecting the best electric razor tailored to the specific needs of beginners. Whether you're making the switch from traditional razors or just starting out on your shaving journey, understanding the basics and pinpointing the right device is worth understanding to get it right.

I will show you the top recommendations for 2024, explain any special considerations, and provide valuable insights to help you make an informed decision on the best electric razor for your unique needs. It's important to enjoy a  smooth, comfortable shave that aligns perfectly with your beginner grooming endeavors.

Key things you need to know about buying an electric shaver for a beginner.

Electric razors have many advantages that make them particularly well-suited for beginners starting to shave.

  • Their user-friendly design removes the risk of nicks and cuts and are a very safe option
  • They are very easy to use unlike other razors as all of those take time and practise to master (Safety razors, straight razors, etc)
  • Electric razors are generally quicker for shaving, allowing beginners to achieve a clean shave efficiently.
  • You can use them to dry shave, unlike other razors where you need to use hot water and some type of soap, cream, foam or gel.

Primarily, electric razors are very convenient and easy to use at home or when traveling.

Types of Electric Razors

There are three types of electric razor:

  1. Foil - This type has a thin, perforated foil covering the cutting blades. They are best suited for precise, straight-line shaving.. Ideal for individuals with finer hair and a preference for frequent shaving.
  2. Rotary - This type has circular cutting heads that pivot and are adaptable to facial contours, making them suitable for individuals with more irregular hair growth patterns. They are popular for those who shave less frequently.
  3. Hybrid - As the name suggests, these combine the features of both foil and rotary razors.. That makes them versatile and suitable for various hair types and shaving preferences. They offer a balanced approach, providing the benefits of both foil and rotary designs.

While traditional razors, like those shown above have their merits, electric razors present a compelling alternative for beginners.

  • Safer to use - Electric razors are generally safer, minimizing the risk of accidental cuts, making them well-suited for those still mastering the art of shaving.
  • Convenient - Electric razors eliminate the need for water, shaving cream, and frequent blade changes, making the process for beginners with busy lifestyles faster.
  • Precise - Modern electric razors are designed for precision, ensuring a consistent shave without the need for intricate shaving techniques.
  • Adaptable: Electric razors are adaptable to various hair types and growth patterns, offering a versatile solution for beginners exploring their optimal shaving routine.

Understanding Electric Shaver Price Points

Electric shavers’ range in price from as low as £20 and right up to £600. Why the big difference?

A basic shaver will have all the right features to give you a good quality shave. Typically, they will have 3 floating heads which hold the blades, are cordless and will come with a pop-up trimmer for doing sideburns or general trimming. These are shavers such as the Braun Series 3 300 or the Hatteker Classic.

At the higher end, electric shavers such as the Braun Series 9 9385cc Latest Generation Electric Shaver will have features such as a clean and charge station, fully waterproof, lots of cutting actions, sonic vibrations, and longer lasting batteries.

The reality is that as a beginner, you need to figure out how much you are prepared to spend. Our advice when starting out is to buy a lower priced electric shaver. If you decide you like the quality of shave it gives you, at some time in the future, you can always upgrade to a more expensive option.

So those are, according to our research, the key important things any beginner should know. Our next stage of research then broke down what electric shavers are available that meet the above criterion.

We have now shown below out top recommended electric shavers based on a range of price points.

It also has a trimmer but a key difference is this Philips option can not be used in the shower as it isn't waterproof.

Other Factors to Consider

Charging time for an electric shaver

According to our research, there are two main sources of complaints when people buy and use an electric shaver. Those are:

  • Not a close enough shave – this complaint is mainly about how your face feels after you have had a shave. Does it feel soft and bristle free all over? Many buyers say it does a good enough job but there are small areas, like under the chin, where it has left some short bristles.
  • The electric shaver takes too long to charge – this complaint arises because people don’t want to wait for hours to be able to use a shaver. They want to be able to use it as and when they need it.

When you are buying your first shaver, these small things can easily be overlooked. Charging time can be a real issue for some people. The better shavers have a quick charge and we think that is really an important feature to go for.

Electric Razor Research and Popular Brands

According to Statista (the consumer research company) UK buyers spent in 2020 as follows:

  • 139,000 people bought electric shavers costing less then £10 (8% market share)
  • 528,000 people bought electric shavers costing between £10-£24 (33% market share)
  • 678,000 people bought electric shavers costing between £25-£49 (42% market share)
  • 267,000 people bought electric shavers costing between £10-£24 (16% market share)

So in total in 2020, a total of 1,612,000 electric shavers were sold. The majority of buyers paid less than £50 for an electric shaver. That's worth bearing in mind.

The two main brands available in the UK are Braun and Philips. They account for most electric shavers sold in the United Kingdom.

Philips remain the leading brand and Braun are the second biggest. So, why does that matter? First, it informs us that these two brands make really good quality electric shavers, otherwise they would not be selling such high numbers.

We also found from our research two important things:

They have a local UK based customer service which means they are easy to contact them should you need to and that is important. They also have spare parts available such as replacement batteries or heads.

Both of these things can be very important as your shaver starts to get older and you need to replace worn out or broken parts. As a beginner we would strongly recommend sticking with either Philips or Braun as they have lots of experience in making these shavers. They also invest a lot of money into research and development to keep improving their products.

Skin Types and Shaving

Our advice is not to overlook understanding this section. An electric shaver is mainly used to shave the face and neck areas. These two areas have lots of contours and any good electric shaver needs to have flexible enough heads to be able to move with the contours to get a close and uniform shave.

It is important for any beginner to electric shaving to work out what type of skin they have. That can really determine your best choice of electric shaver. We inherit our skin type from our parents through our genes and can only change that with certain treatments.

There are five main skin types:

  1. Normal – this is skin with a regular texture and a clean and soft appearance.
  2. Dry – almost always dry skin is caused by the weather. Our skin simply lacks moisture and can become quite irritable and itchy.
  3. Oily – the opposite of dry skin where our body produces too much fat/oil from the sebaceous glands. You find a lot of this in adolescents and people under the age of 30. If you are beginner, you are likely to fall into this bracket.
  4. Combination – this is where the skin on our face has both oily and dry areas. The chin for example could be oily and the face cheeks could be dry.
  5. Sensitive – this is a fragile skin and is identified by issues such as itchiness, redness or heat.

The reason we explain these skin types is that different types of electric shaver are better for sensitive skin than others. For example, a shave that can be used for wet shaving is much better for dry or sensitive skin than using a dry shaver on it. Likewise, a foil shaver is a better choice for sensitive skin rather than an electric rotary shaver.

Special Considerations for Beginners

  1. Always read the instruction manual provided with your electric razor. Understanding the specific features and recommended usage ensures a smoother experience.
  2. Prior to shaving, wash your face with warm water to soften the hair and open up pores. Applying a pre-shave lotion can further enhance the comfort of the shave.
  3. Always hold the electric razor at a 90-degree angle to your skin. Avoid pressing too hard; let the razor's blades do the work to prevent irritation.
  4. Begin with short, gentle strokes to get accustomed to the razor's feel and your skin's sensitivity. Gradually increase pressure if needed, but avoid excessive force.
  5. Follow the natural direction of hair growth for a more comfortable shave. For most areas, this means shaving with the grain.
  6. Regularly clean the razor according to the manufacturer's guidelines. Proper maintenance ensures optimal performance and hygiene.
  7. Allow time for your skin to adapt to the electric razor. It may take a few uses to determine the best technique and achieve the desired results.
  8. If your electric razor supports wet shaving, experiment with shaving creams or gels. Some beginners find this method more comfortable, especially during the initial transition.
  9. While budget is a consideration, investing in a quality electric razor designed for beginners can significantly improve the overall shaving experience. Look for features like skin protection and adaptability.

Hopefully we have given you enough information on deciding the best electric shaver for a beginner. We would always advise any man to wet shave as that is always the best option for a close shave. If like many millions of people you don't have time to do that, then an electric shaver is the handiest option.

Best Home Laser Hair Removal UK

If you have tried shaving, waxing or creams and are fed up with having to constantly shave to avoid unwanted body hair, then it is time to consider a change. Laser IPL devices have been out for some time now and they are making a big difference in the way that people go about removing hair.

It is a pain free option, hair stays away longer and although they are still an expensive purchase, they are dropping in price in the UK. IPL stands for "Intense Pulsed Light." By applying this treatment it helps stunt the hair cycle growth and more importantly regrowth.

Price is always a big deciding factor when considering this type of home laser treatment. The Philips Lumea models and the Braun Silk models are the most popular choices but these cost on average around £300 in the UK. There are however some other brands who have IPL devices in the £40 to £100 price range. That means, that should you wish to try this type of IPL treatment the lower price options offer a way of doing this.

IPL Hair Removal Devices - Things You Must Know Before Buying

It would be easy to say buy one of these because they are great and users love them. However, that is simply not the case and we know there are things you absolutely need to know, before deciding whether to buy one of these or not?

What exactly is IPL?

Many people confuse IPL with professional hair removal laser treatment. These are not the same thing. In professional clinics they use a more powerful laser, using different light source spectrums and focus on a more concentrated area at each session. It is a very effective treatment and also an expensive option.

The home IPL device is still a laser treatment but it uses what is called a "broad spectrum light." This light is targeted at the melanin substance of the skin. Melanin is a substance in your body that produces hair, eye and skin pigmentation. The more melanin you produce, the darker your eyes, hair and skin will be.

The IPL light damages the root of the hair and it is that which stops the regrowth of the hair, and makes it a more permanent solution than any cream or type of shaving. Waxing, shaving and hair removal creams do deliver instant results but in reality these are short term results.

IPL certainly offers a longer term solution but you do not get the instant gratification of hair removal. It takes time, patience and dedication on your part to get those longer term impressive results. The feedback from the many thousands of users is that these work well as long as you follow the manufacturer's instructions carefully, and do the really boring applications of the device when you are supposed to.

Is IPL Safe? - The really important question.

If you are doing anything to your body there is an element of risk involved. IPL is considered safe to use, providing the device you purchase is from a reliable trusted brand, and that you follow their detailed instructions to the letter. Some users have reported side effects such as a redness and slight discomfort after use. A few users have said they got blisters or burns, but thankfully those are rare.

Overall though, the majority of users say that they use the device at the right intervals and that it is a painless process with no side effects.

Is IPL Hair removal painful?

Every human being on the planet has a pain threshold. When using an IPL device most users describe the experience as a slight discomfort rather than a pain. Some users feel very little discomfort and others say that there is a little heat or tingly sensation. Each session is fairly short so any discomfort will be short lived.

A few people have said this is pain free but it really does depend on your definition of pain. Waxing or plucking is painful and we know that IPL is not at that level of pain. However, to say the IPL treatments are pain free is also a myth. The level of discomfort will vary from person to person, but suffice to say, there is a degree of pain involved.

Which areas of your body can you not use IPL devices?

These cannot be used on certain parts of the body. These parts include:

  • The genitals, nipples or anus
  • Around the ears
  • Around the eyes or eyebrows
  • On men's beards
  • On damaged skin, varicose veins, sunburn, cold sores or cuts
  • On tattoos
  • On warts, moles or large freckles, lesions, and piercings,

So if your plan was to use around any of these areas, or anywhere nears moles etc, then don't buy an IPL device. There are scientific and medical reasons for this, but primarily the skin is much darker in these areas, and it could cause burning of the skin.

What Medical Conditions Prevent You from Using an IPL Device?

Anyone with any of the following medical conditions should not use an IPL device:

  • Skin cancer of any kind or any chronic skin disease such as psoriasis
  • Anyone taking radiation therapy or chemotherapy within the last 3-6 months
  • Anyone who is sensitive to light
  • Anyone taking pain killers
  • Anyone taking anti-coagulation or Immuno-suppressive medications
  • Anyone who is pregnant

Can all skin types use an IPL Device?

People that have pale to medium skin and dark hair are the best candidates for IPL. That is because IPL devices identify and target hair pigment that is a contrasting shade to your skin. In essence this really means anyone that gets dark hairs on their skin, and has a pale to medium skin type,

  • People with white, blonde, grey, red and light hair growth have very little pigment and as such IPL can not detect those so not successful in removing those types of hair growth
  • Anyone with a dark skin tone shouldn't bother with an IPL device as it is ineffective
  • It is also worth knowing that IPL doesn't work on permanent makeup or tattoos.

How many treatments before seeing results?

If you closely follow the instructions then you will see noticeable result anywhere between 4-12 weeks. It take that length of time to have enough sessions to treat all of the visible hairs. Some hairs will not grow back at all. Some hairs may grow back but they will be smaller and finer. A top up session can then be completed and that will help remove those and prevent them from growing back.

The reality is that the number of treatments really depends on the quality of the IPL device you buy, how closely you follow the instructions, the type of hair that you have and the skin tone.

On average you can get about 80% hair reduction in around 3 treatments depending on the device. After a few touch up treatments, you can then be hair free for about 3 months.

How to properly use an IPL Home Laser Device

IPL devices work much better when they have visible hair to work with. That means allowing the hair to grow and you should not be shaving, waxing or removing any hair before starting with your IPL device. Timing is everything and for example you may have to suffer hairy legs for 2-3 weeks before starting with your new device.

When the hair has grown, you can then shave it to leave the hair follicle. The IPL device will then target the follicle and damage the root of the hair follicle. Don't use an IPL device on long hairs as that opens up the risk of burning the hairs and the skin underneath.

Initially regular IPL sessions are required to deal with all the unwanted hair. Each brand who sells these devices will give you clear instructions on how often to use their machine, and when you can expect to see results.

IPL Device Buying Tips

When these devices first appeared on the UK market they were quite generic and basic. That has changed a lot and now the machines are much more targeted at certain skin types and certain skin tones.

There are certain features that you should understand before parting with your hard earned money. We have explained these just below.

Which Brands are Best?

In the UK market, the IPL devices sold are dominated by two brands; Philips and Braun. The Philips Lumea ranges and the Braun IPL Silk are the best sellers by quite a long way. These devices are expensive ranging in price from £300-400.

A range of other brands have entered the UK market with much cheaper prices ranging from £60-100. These are brands such as Aminzer, Innza, Toutol and Zumyu. It is hard to find out much information about those brands online. On the other hand Braun and Philips are pretty much household names with UK customer service and guarantees.

The decision as to which device to buy will really come down to how much you are willing to spend on one of these machines.

The right device for the right skin tone

When these devices first arrived on the UK market, the key feature was the number of times the IPL device can emit a flash. Most have a minimum of 100,000 but once this runs out, you'll need a replacement lamp. You can’t get replacement lamps for all devices, while some devices offer unlimited flashes.

Today the devices have been modified and designed to use with the right skin tone. We have shown an example below using the Philips brand as an example.

Skin Tone

IPL Device

White to mid-brown

Lumea Advanced BR1923/00

White to Dark brown

Lumea Advanced BR1921/00

You will find different models from the same brand and the main difference will either be the skin tone type or the type and number of accessories that you get with the IPL device.

Useful attachments

Some devices come with all the attachments that you need. Others don't so just be aware of that when you are buying. The cheaper devices tend to have a manual or automatic mode but use the same head for all parts of the body. The more expensive machines have different attachments which are better suited to different areas of the body.

  • Body attachments
  • Face attachments
  • Bikini attachments
  • Pen trimmers
  • Facial cleaning brushes

For example the Philips Lumea Advanced IPL  Hair Removal Device comes with a Satin Compact pen trimmer, 1 Body attachment (4cm2), 1 Face attachment (2cm2), and 1 Bikini area attachment (2cm2), whereas all of the cheaper brands have just one head that is used for everything.

Corded/Cordless

Most IPL brands use a corded version. In other words it has to be plugged into an electrical socket to be able to use it. As an example the Philips advanced range is this type. If you prefer the freedom of cordless then the Philips Lumea Prestige is the proper choice. You will find that a cordless option is going to be slightly more expensive.

Energy Levels

IPL devices should have different energy levels. Usually there will be 5 of those. The reason for this is that you can pick the energy level according to your hair color and skin tone. The manufacturer will have instructions on which level to select.

Some machines also have a manual mode which is suitable for small and individual amounts of hair. This is the best choice for sensitive areas such as the bikini line, upper lip, and the armpit. The automatic mode is best for larger and less sensitive areas such as the arms, legs, and back.

Number of Flashes

IPL devices use light flashes to help remove the hair. In some older devices when the flashes ran out that element of the device would have to be refilled. Nowadays manufacturers have greatly extended the lifetime of these flashes and typically that can now sit anywhere between 400,000 to 999,000 flashes. (999,000 flashes is enough for 25 years of treatment

Warranties and Guarantees

The average warranty or guarantee is 2 years. This will vary from brand to brand with some only offering a 1 year guarantee.

Some brands also offer a money back guarantee which ranges in length. We always recommend reading carefully what the guarantee actually covers as well as knowing the length of warranty.

What you need to know about the F3 model?

  • Foil shaver - this is a dual foil shaver and the oscillating blades (cutters) sit under the foil. As a general rule foil shavers are always better suited for any person with sensitive skin. A rotary shaver will give a slightly more aggressive shave. You can buy replacement foils for this should the foil wear out. We found these on Amazon for around £7 and also on eBay. Most foils last for about 18-24 months. You can also purchase the foil and cutting heads online and it is around £17 for the full set of these. You should replace foils if they show wear and tear, or you feel the shaver pulling at hairs. You should also replace the foil if you notice the shaver starting to irritate your skin.
  • Charging - It takes around 4 hours to fully charge this shaver. There is no 5 minute quick charge. On a full charge you can shave for around 40 minutes. At around 5 minutes a shave that is enough to last you for a week if you shave once a day. There is an LED gauge that shows you how much charge you have left. The charger lights up when it is charging and the green light goes out when fully charged. You can't use the shaver while it is charging. It is worth noting that this shaver comes with a 2 pin shaver outlet plug. If you want to use it by plugging it into a socket you will need an adaptor. We would recommend the Masterplug Shaving Adaptor which costs around £1.50
  • Trimmer - this pops out of the back of the shaver. It is like most trimmers on electric shavers as they are just OK for trimming side burns to create a neat edge. Like many others we found this to be flimsy and just awkward to use. We mention the trimmer as many shavers have these and this model has that type of standard trimmer.
  • Cleaning - This shaver is not IP rated and it is not waterproof. You can wipe the outside of the shaver with a damp cloth. For a full clean the head of the shaver does come off with a push button head release. You can then rinse the cutters (underneath the shaving head) and the shaving head itself under warm running water.

Remington Brand

Remington are an American brand and are a subsidiary of Spectrum Brands and Oak Hill Capital. They were established in New York in 1937. Remington F3 Shaver Summary

We do a lot of research on electric shavers. This Remington F3 model is a basic foil electric shaver. There are not that many features so really not that much that can go wrong. It is in our opinion one of the best value for money electric shavers on the UK market. There are not that many electric shavers around for under £25. Any that we did find were from brands we have never heard of. Remington are a well established brand and this one comes with a 2 year warranty. You can extend this warranty if you register the shaver online. So that would give you some peace of mind with a full 3 year warranty.

This shaver is a little slow to charge compared to others which can charge fully in an hour. That said that type of shaver will be 3-4 times more expensive so it is a bit of a trade off. The majority of buyers said this gives a close shave, has a good battery life and is easy to clean and look after.

What you need to know about the F4 model?

  • Foil shaver - this is a dual foil shaver and the oscillating blades (cutters) sit under the foil. As a general rule foil shavers are always better suited for any person with sensitive skin. A rotary shaver will give a slightly more aggressive shave.
  • Wet & dry shaving -  You can use this F4 shaver for dry shaving. You can also use it for wet shaving if you prefer to shave with a gel, soap or shaving cream.
  • Replacement foils for F4 shaver - You can buy replacement foils for this should the foil wear out. We found these on Amazon for around £14 and also on eBay. Most foils last for about 18-24 months. You can also purchase the foil and cutting heads online and it is around £30 for the full set of these. You should replace foils if they show wear and tear, or you feel the shaver pulling at hairs. You should also replace the foil if you notice the shaver starting to irritate your skin. We did have to do quite a bit of searching to find these.
  • Charging - It takes around 4 hours to fully charge this shaver. There is a 15  minute quick charge. On a full charge you can shave for around 45 minutes. At around 5 minutes a shave that is enough to last you for a week if you shave once a day. The lights will come on one after the other then go off in a repeating pattern. Once fully charged both lights will come on for 5 minutes then go out.
  • 3 day stubble attachment - Some users like the look of a 3 day stubble. This shaver comes with an attachment that clips on the top of the foil. You shave with this attachment on and it leaves behind a stubble. Most complaints about this shaver came from this feature. Some buyers thought it worked well and others didn't. Those that did complain appeared to have wiry or coarser hair. If you have that type of hair you are going to be better off buying an actual stubble trimmer rather than a clip on gadget.
  • Cleaning - This shaver is not IP rated but it is classed as waterproof. You can wipe the outside of the shaver with a damp cloth. For a full clean the head of the shaver does come off with a push button head release. You can then rinse the cutters (underneath the shaving head) and the shaving head itself under warm running water.

Remington F4 Shaver Summary

We do a lot of research on electric shavers. This Remington F4 model is a foil electric shaver. There are not that many features so really not that much that can go wrong. It is in our opinion a reliable electric shaver. Remington are a well established brand and this one comes with a 2 year warranty. You can extend this warranty if you register the shaver online. So that would give you some peace of mind with a full 3 year warranty.

This shaver is a little slow to charge compared to others which can charge fully in an hour. That said that type of shaver will be 2-3 times more expensive so it is a bit of a trade off. The majority of buyers said this gives a close shave, has a good battery life and is easy to clean and look after. The other two features on this shaver work Ok but they are not huge selling points in our opinion.

The trimmer is like any standard trimmer and can be used to trim sideburns. The 3 day stubble attachment is a simple clip on attachment which leaves you with a stubble look and feel. The effectiveness of this attachment divides opinions from buyers who use this feature.

If this is not the Remington shaver for you then you can read our information on all the Remington electric foil shaver models by clicking on this link.

Overall though, this is a good basic foil shaver, that represents very good value for money. Foils and cutting heads are available for replacements and it is supported by a good warranty. There is also a good user manual. Many people bought this shaver for their elderly father or grandfather. The main reason for that is that a foil shaver is better for sensitive skin, the shaver is easier to use and takes little to no maintenance. It is also affordable for most people and is made to last.

Remington F5 Electric Shaver UK Review

Thanks for taking your time to check out our information on the Remington F5 electric shaver. The model number for this shaver is the F5000. This was released to the UK market around 3-4 years ago. It is a mid range price point for Remington with an average price of between £46-50. It takes 2 hours to charge this shaver and that will give you around 50 minutes of shaving.

We will explain the key features and benefits of this shaver just below. We will also give you the feedback from those people who have purchased this Remington shaver, and explain how they rate this, and what they had to say after they had bought and used it for a period of time. That will help you decide if this is the right foil shaver for you.

How Online Buyers rate the Remington F5 Style Series?

During our research we found around 3,000+ online buyer reviews and that is a sign that this shaver sells really well in the UK.  This was released at the time to compete against Philips and Braun who were releasing more advanced types of shavers.

The overall rating is 82% buyer satisfaction with 54% of all buyers rating this as an excellent shaver with a 5 star rating. However we also wish to point out that around 10% of all buyers have given this a bad rating.

At 82% or 4 out of 5 stars, this rating is still good without being exceptional. We also think the poor ratings are too high for this shaver as 1 in 10 buyers gave this a bad review. We will show you why just below.

What Online Buyers say about the Remington F5 Shaver?

PROS

  • The majority of buyers were pleased with this shaver and said it does give a close shave
  • Buyers liked the fact that it could be used for dry shaving and wet shaving
  • A large number of buyers say that the shaver is light and comfortable to use

CONS

  • A number of buyers say the shaver just doesn't shave close enough
  • A few buyers said the foils don't last

There are 10% of bad reviews. That is always concerning and those complaints were really about the closeness of the shave and a lot of buyers compared this to the closeness of a wet shave. Electric shavers, even the very best ones, don't quite match a wet shave with a sharp blade. We found that this F5 did a good job overall.

What you need to know about the F5 model?

  • Foil shaver - this shaver is designed to work as a shaver, beard trimmer and 3 day stubble option with the principle that you have more choices when it comes to your facial hair appearance. The shaver itself has a set of oscillating cutters that sit under a set of dual foils and that is for normal close shaving. This shaver also has a pivoting head and the purpose of that is it can move slightly and that helps the foils stay in contact with the various shapes and angles of your chin, neck, jaw bones and cheeks.
  • 3 day stubble look - Some shavers like to have the look of a 3 day stubble. With this shaver there is a clip on attachment that goes on top of the shaver and when you use this attachment, it leaves the 3 day look.

  • Wet & dry shaving -  You can use this F5 shaver for dry shaving. You can also use it for wet shaving if you prefer to shave with a gel, soap or shaving cream. You can also clean this shaver under the tap.
  • Replacement foils for F5 shaver -  You can purchase the foil and cutting heads online and it is around £30 for the full set of these. We could not find the foil on its own. You should replace foils and heads if they show wear and tear, or you feel the shaver pulling at hairs. You should also replace the foil and cutters if you notice the shaver starting to irritate your skin.
  • Charging - It takes around 2 hours to fully charge this shaver. On a full charge you can shave for around 50 minutes. At around 5 minutes a shave that is enough to last you for about 10 days if you shave once a day. This shaver has a low, charging and full indicator. You cannot use the shaver while it is plugged in for charging. It is worth noting that this shaver comes with a 2 pin shaver outlet plug. If you want to use it by plugging it into a socket you will need an adaptor. We would recommend the Masterplug Shaving Adaptor which costs around £1.50
  • Cleaning - This shaver is not IP rated but it is classed as waterproof. You can wipe the outside of the shaver with a damp cloth. For a full clean the head of the shaver does come off with a push button head release. Remington F5 Foil Shaver Shaver Summary

We do a lot of research on electric shavers. This Remington F5 Series model is a foil electric shaver. This is a step up from the F3 and F4 shavers as they have added more features to this model. The F5 model includes a 3 day stubble trimmer attachment, a beard attachment with combs and can be used for both dry and wet shaving.

This shaver takes 2 hours to charge and gives you 50 minutes of shaving. That is pretty much in line with the majority of electric shavers on the market. The beard trimmer is easy to setup and use and you can buy spare ones for around £25.

If this is not the Remington shaver for you then you can read our information on all the Remington electric foil shaver models by clicking on this link.

If you prefer to read about our list of electric shavers then click on this link.

Overall though, this is a good foil shaver, and also sold at a decent price when compared to Braun and Philips for the same features. 1 in 10 did give this shaver a bad review and that may put some buyers off this model. We read those bad reviews and there were a few that had issues with the foils wearing out. The other complaints were comparing an electric shave to a wet one which is not a good comparison.

Wet shaving even with a basic cheap disposable razor is going to give you a very smooth and close shave. Electric shavers just don't give you that feel.

How to use a beard bib?

Step 1 - Place the apron around your neck - You attach the apron around the neck using whatever fastening attachment the apron has. Some use simple ties, others use velcro and some use buttons. Once that is done you then attach the suction cups.

Step 2 - Attach the suction caps - The key to making these work is the suction cups. All of them will attach to mirror glass or marble. That makes them suitable for mirrors, windows and most tiles. (Patterned tiles can be difficult) Some manufacturers use a clip to improve the suction such as the Justime one. Other manufacturers recommend wetting the suction caps first before sticking them to the surface.

Step 3 - Use your beard trimmer - You can use a beard trimmer, a razor of your preferred method of trimming your beard. The hair should fall into and be collected by the bib which stops any hairs going down the sink and messing up the bathroom.

Step 4 - Hair disposal - Remove the suction cups and dispose of any hair into a bin. Don't be tempted to flush this down the loo as over time that will also block the drains.
