The Best Hair Clippers In 2017

In this article we review the best hair clippers for men that are currently available in the UK market. Many men who used to spend a lot of money at the barber or hairdresser, have now opted to do it at home. Thanks to some of the best hair clippers now becoming available to the general public, this is now possible. Many families are also using professional style hair clippers to save spending so much money at the barbers.

In days gone past, some of the attempts, at producing these type of hair cutting products for home use was pretty poor. That is no longer the case, as the clippers available right now, are high professional quality, and identical to those used in the well established hairdressing salons.

Those changes by the manufacturers now bring many guys the opportunity to create the look they want to have, but in the comfort of their own home.

What Are The Best Brand of Hair Clippers To Buy?

When you see brand names like Wahl, Panasonic, Remington and Philips in this market, then you know that we are talking about quality. It is not just men who are now saving a lot of money by cutting their own hair. Families are also now enjoying the benefits of being able to use these.

Now, I am NOT talking about the days gone past, where your Dad would place a bowl on your head, and end up leaving their sons look like frightened monks. (I was one of those, and more than once)

The good news is that those days are now a long and distant memory. With the arrival of these new hair clippers, you really do have complete and full control. You will know, if you have read much of our website here, at the Shaving Emporium, that we like our top ten lists.

That is why we are pleased to bring you another with the top 10 list of the best hair clippers, that are currently available in the UK.

We hope that you find it useful and informative. As and when these change in the market place, we will of course update the list so as you are always up to date with only the best choices.

The good news is that hair clippers are not that expensive and there will be a set available to suit all family budgets.

Understanding Hair Clipper Grades

When buying hair clippers you will see a lot of reference to grades. They are on a scale of 1 to 8. To be honest, the only ones that are ever used are grades 1 -4. I have included a hair clipper grading chart below, just to make life a bit easier. Essentially though Grade 1 starts at 1/8″, and then each grade increases by 1/8″ all the way up to an inch.

26 1/4

Best Selling Hair Clipper – Philips Series 5000

Philips Series 5000 Hair Clipper HC5450/83 Now we wanted to include this one as it is the best seller over at Amazon UK. The reason it is not on our list is because it has rating of 4.1 stars and as you can see the other models had higher ratings. The reason that this one remains popular is because at around £33-35 it is good value for money, and it is a tough and long lasting model that cuts twice as fast as any other hair clipper on the market.

That is why many men buy it and why many families with sons buy it. It gets the job done quickly and if you have a few boys, then you will know speed is of the essence. That is thanks to the unique Philip’s Turbo button which delivers fast and effortless results.

Top 3 Hair Clippers Available In the UK Market

As always, we also like to do more detailed reviews of our top products. When we reviewed all of these over a long period of time, it became pretty obvious that Wahl are the best known brand, in hair clipper world. They really do make high quality products at affordable prices. This company have been leading the way in the trimmer product range for quite a while now. Personally I think they make the best ones. Some other guys here at the Emporium have however used other brands, and in particular the Babyliss brand seems to be a very popular choice.

So based on our own interpretation of all the reviews on various forums, websites and at Amazon, here are the three hair clippers that we would recommend.

Best Hair Clippers for Men Reviews

Wahl 79400-800 Colour Pro Coded Mains Hair Clipper Kit

This one pretty much leads the way and we think sets the standard for all hair clippers. The price for what you get of around £25 is in our opinion pretty special.

This one runs off the mains and is a classic barber shop style clipper. A well displayed colour code on the handle shows the different types of cuts. We found that feature to be very clever and also very handy. (Reduces the potential for things to go wrong)

It is really quiet which we liked and it has sets of high carbon steel blades. This one has guide combs for grades 1-8 (3 – 25 mm), plus left and right ear taper guide combs. We particularly like the fact that this one can deal really well with thick hair, and we found that many of the others struggled a bit with wiry thick hair.

If you are a guy who tends to have thicker and slightly uncontrollable hair, then this is probably the best choice for you.

In the box you get the clippers, blade guard, 8 combs, a left and right ear comb, an eyebrow comb, ear trim comb, a barber’s comb, a pair of good quality scissors, 2 hair clips, the barber’s cape, oil, cleaning brush and a storage case. Yes all that for £25 we think makes a pretty good deal.

BaByliss For Men Super Hair Clipper

This is probably the most expensive hair clipper on the market, or certainly one of them. If you can afford this one, then you should buy it as it is a pretty amazing product.

The problem right now is that the recession is still upon us in the UK, and money is tight. That said, the money you will save on going to the barbers, you will get back in just a few months. We think that alone is worth some consideration.

According to many of the review websites, and men’s magazines, this one came out tops every single time. At Men’s Heath for example 80% of all men surveyed, said this was the best clipper they had ever used.

We would struggle to argue with that, but to put that in perspective, it is double the price of our first selection, so it probably should be the best. It is a fully professional hair clipper, with hardened Japanese steel blades,  that makes cutting through hairs an absolute gift. Again it covers grades 1-8, and also has your left and right taper guides.

It can be plugged into the mains, or charged and used as a cordless.. A full 3-hour charge, will give you just over an hour’s full power cutting and trimming time.

That is very useful for holidays if you are away for 2-3 weeks. A few of the guys here use this one and it is hard to shut them up about the quality of the product. I stick with the first one though simply based on the value for money argument.

Philips QC5570/13 DIY Easy Reach 180 Degree Hair Clipper

And last but not least is this clipper from Philips. This one is just under £40 when we last checked and gets really solid reviews for performance. It has a “rotating head” action that allows you to access those difficult areas of the head. That takes a bit of getting used to, but when you do, it is a pretty neat feature.

The combs allow cutting lengths of between 1 – 15 mm, and they have a precision cut for the very fine straight lines. The blades are also self-sharpening, and there is also a battery low indicator on this one, which again is handy. We liked the idea that you could wash it out under the tap.

It can be used as a corded or cordless clipper so again perfect for the home and also handy for travel. Philips have started to do a nice range of these products, and they are growing all the time. At the moment though, we feel that this one is the best, and reviewers are agreeing with us on that choice.

Hair Clipper Maintenance

No matter which one of these you decide to opt for, just take a few seconds and look after it. When finished with a cut, just quickly dust it off and try to keep the blades as hair free as you can. If you have bought one that needs a little oil, then we recommend doing that every 6 months. It only takes a couple of minutes to do that, but will greatly extend the life of the product.

How Much Is An Average Male Haircut in the UK?

Now we know that this can vary a lot depending on where you live, what type of barber/hairdresser you go to, and exactly what you want to have done. However the average cost for a man is £10, and for a boy, it is about £7. In the cities you will tend to pay almost half as much again, and the charges continue to rise.

The average cost of a set of hair clippers is around £25. We will let you do the sums but a Dad with two boys going for a haircut will cost on average, £24. If they go once a month that is about £300 a year. That doesn’t include the trouble of getting there, waiting and fuel. Buy a set of clippers, do it at home, and save your money?

I recently took my Grandson to our local barber. He is 3 years of age and was going to a wedding so his Mum wanted a professional to cut his hair. That cost £9 for a 3-year old, and even his Mum admitted, it was just an OK job.

So there you have it folks and we hope that you have found this review of the best hair clippers in the UK of some use. If you haven’t found exactly what you are looking for, then you can always search here for more hair clippers
