Hugo Boss Aftershave Reviews
Hugo Boss is a well known name both in the world of fashion and in the world of fragrances and scents. In this article we will focus on their aftershave range, and discover which are the most popular for many guys. It is worth pointing out at the beginning that an aftershave and an “eau de toilette,” are not the same thing.
For that matter a cologne is also something different as well. People do tend to confuse these three. If you would like to find out about the Hugo Boss range of eau de toilette, then please click here to read about their top 10 products.
Aftershave vs Eau de Toilette vs Cologne
I just wanted to point out the main differences between an aftershave, an eau de toilette and a cologne as I think it is important to understand that these are not the same products. Without offending anyone’s feelings most men truly do not have a clue, whereas almost every lady does understand.
For most guys they will basically lift a bottle of “smelly stuff” and splash it on just about anywhere and everywhere. If you have ever been in a football changing room you will understand exactly what I mean when I say that.
The main difference between the three is the amount of perfume oil that each different product contains. That is usually expressed as a percentage of the total amount of liquid in the bottle.
An aftershave will have around 1-3% of this oil which is a small amount and as such the scent will not last as long as an eau de toilette. When a man applies an aftershave it will last for between 2-3 hours.
Aftershaves will almost always contain some type of product that helps soothe the skin on the face. This could be something like glycerine or Aloe Vera. An aftershave will also contain some form of alcohol which helps close the pores. It is also the alcohol that gives that nip or sting to the face, when an aftershave is splashed on.
Eau de Toilette
The Eau de Toilette contains more of the oil and in fact too much oil to apply on to the face. The amounts of oil vary, but it can be anything between 4-8% of perfume oil. In other words it is slightly more scented and lasts longer, anything from around 6-8 hours. As this is not applied to the face itself, it should be applied to the neck, wrists and chest areas.
There is a huge misconception that these are not as strong as aftershaves but that is not the case, and in fact the opposite is true. The reason for this misconception is that the eau do toilette is usually compared to perfume in the female world of fragrance, and in that case the perfume is much stronger and much more expensive.
This is simply just a different name for eau de toilette. Many people think it is the same as an aftershave but that is also not the case. Like the EDT you apply that to what are known as the pressure points like the neck and wrist. Some guys even dab behind the ears!
When it comes to buying these the eau do toilette will be MORE expensive than the aftershave.
Best Selling List of Hugo Boss Aftershaves
There are a number of different ones in this range so let’s have a look at those which sell the best and are the popular choice of many men. Hugo Boss launched in 1985 and now do a whole range of clothes for both men and women. They also have a kid’s range of clothing and I think are best known for their fragrances. They aim themselves at the higher end of the market.
This is their standard aftershave product and is aimed at the casual or sport’s type of market. The average price for 100 ml will be around £45, and as you can see from the image has a nice looking bottle, with a black box packaging. Like any scent this one also divides opinion and those who love it, really love it. Any of the bad reviews that I read about this one came down to the fact that the scent did not last long enough.
As I explained above, that is what you get from an aftershave. If it lasts anything between 2-3 hours that will be about as good as you can hope for.
Hugo Boss Baldessarini After Shave
This one is more popular than the one above and is describes as having tones of tangerine, orange and green mint. All after shaves are made up of what are called “notes.” These are base notes, heart notes and top notes. It is the fragrance industries method of combining different oils and scents to make something that has a pleasant smell. Yes it does all get that technical.
It is easier to describe this one as being strong and a nice earthy feeling to it. It makes you feel clean and quite vibrant as well and is one I have used myself. I would say it has a light citrus smell. This Baldessarini range of products is one that I really like and according to everything that I have read, you can only now buy this online. I have no idea why that is the case, but it is certainly worth a try in my opinion.
Boss Orange for Men Aftershave Lotion
This is one from their new “Orange” range and these are proving to be very popular. Again from the many reviews that I have read ladies tend to buy this one for their partners as a gift. I received this one at Christmas and have only tried it once so far. Personally I still prefer the Baldessarini one, but this does make a nice change.
I will have to give it a few more tries before I can properly make my mind up, but it does have a nice scent and that lasts for about 2 hours. It is pretty expensive though with an average price of around £30 for just 60 ml. That isn’t great value for money as I am used to paying that amount for 100 ml. Still it was nice to receive it as a gift, and is worth checking out.
Hugo Boss Bottled Night After Shave
The mysterious name is all about the branding of this particular product. It has a mixture of a clean birch scent with lavender through it which makes it a nice light scent. Men who use the standard Hugo, that I described in the first of these reviews do tend to try this one out and appear to like it.
It has a really nice scent and a couple of my colleagues will not use anything else. It certainly sells very well and gets some great reviews. If you are uncertain, then this is one that you could start with. Like any fragrance it smells slightly different depending on the skin type, so you may notice that.
That said, this one is very pleasant and fragrant in a musky but airy way. Buyers over at Amazon rate this one 4.8 out of 5 stars and that is the highest rating for any of the after shaves from Boss.
Hugo Boss Selection After Shave Lotion for Him
The one with the crazy price tag. On average 90 ml of this will set you back..wait for it..about £130. Now here is the strange thing about that. It is also one of the best sellers in their range. It does get great reviews with an average of 4.6 out of 5 stars so little doubt that it is a very good product.
The “Selection” range was launched in 2006 and continues to prove to be very popular. I don’t own this one but when I was on holiday in Cyprus, I did manage to get a little test splash of this. Reviewers describe the scent as being “manly” though I am never quite sure what that means.
To me it was quite a light fragrance and to be honest I did not expect it to last for long. I was surprised though as it lingered for about 3 hours so about right for a top quality, classy after shave.
Ladies tend to buy this one for something like a birthday, Valentine’s day or Christmas. I guess at those special times you can justify the spend, because let’s face it, it is not cheap.
