Homemade Shaving Cream for Men
If you like the thoughts of having your own homemade recipe for a good quality shaving cream, then you will enjoy this article, which is about doing exactly that. Sadly many guys decide to use that horrible canned foam which is just packed full of chemicals. Here at the Emporium we would never recommend using that stuff unless you were stuck on a deserted island and had nothing else.
Those who understand the finer elements of wet shaving will have left foams well behind and starting using creams made by companies like Proraso, Old Bond Street etc. Now these are good and I use them myself, but have always wondered what it would be like to be able to make my own.
Why Bother Making Your Own Cream?
I think this is a fair enough question. At the end of the day, shaving cream is not really an expensive purchase and it does last you a pretty long time. Why go to all the hassle then of trying to make your own. Well for me there are really two reasons:
- The first is that I would just want to find out if I could
- The second would be that I would be 100% certain that it would be made from natural products, and perfume free.
I did some searching around to see what ingredients would work best in a homemade recipe and see why people were picking those. The only thing I knew was that most creams are made from either butter or oil or a combination of them both. The one that popped off the page time after time was a product called “Shea butter.” Many people seemed to use this as their main preference.
The other way to make a cream would be to take a good quality soap and add some oil to that along with some heat and water. So as you can see I had the general principles of how I thought I should do it, but none of the real expertise. That’s when I started my research and found a couple of popular recipes.
Best Homemade Shaving Recipe
I found one that I liked a lot and then made a few small adjustments to make it even better. (Well I think it works better anyway) I ruled out the soap method as it was quite messy, and it seemed to harden quite quickly and not really create a lather I liked. Instead I use this one and it works pretty well. I will continue to buy and use other ones of course, but every now and then, this is a fun thing to do.
- 1 cup of Shea Butter
- 2/3 cup of coconut oil
- 1/4 cup of good quality olive oil – use the best quality that you have
- 2-3 tablespoons of baking soda
Do NOT use the wife’s good cooking pots. Get an old metal dish or pot and put the coconut oil and the butter and allow them to melt over a low heat. After they have melted take it off the heat and throw in the olive oil. (Now if you like scents..I like a hint of vanilla, you can add a few drops of vanilla oil, or whichever essential oil you like, add them in as well..For the record I tried mint and did not like that one bit)
You can then pour this into a container (an old bowl is best) and place it in the fridge. This will make it hardish, but mainly it is just to allow it to get a nice solid feel to it. Once that has been achieved, then take it out and leave it at room temperature for an hour or so. This will allow it to soften again, and that is when you add the baking soda.
Now if I was a brave man, which I am not, I would start up my good lady’s Kenwood and mix this. However, rather than listen to how I might have ruined her precious mixer, I just used an old whisk and beat it up by hand. It is hard work, but there is also a general sense of manual satisfaction. The secret to getting this to work is quite literally to beat it to within an inch of its life. If you don’t beat it enough it will separate over time.
Now I have a couple of problems with this one so it is not quite perfected yet. I noticed that it is a little oily and could even clog up your sink, so we don’t want that. The baking soda does act like an exfoliator so that works ok. I read on a couple of soap making sites to use glycerin and also to use bentonite instead of the baking soda. I haven’t tried either yet so will let you know if they make a difference.
The video below is a more complex version of the recipe I have shown above. Much as it looks good, I am not sure if I would even want to get all the ingredients that she mentions.
The Aloe Vera I do understand alright as that is just really good for your skin, and works well as an after sun skin conditioner.
I sense though that I will never be going into production of my own line of shaving cream products. It is a bit of fun to have a try and see what happens, but good old Proraso will do for me. I will no doubt have a few more experiments, but as long as you are using cream instead of that foam stuff, you will get a good quality shave.
