Best Shaving Cream For Men 2017
So just what is the best shaving cream for a man to use? Well the real answer to that is that it varies, depending on a number of different issues such as skin type and especially sensitivity. Men have different types of skin, their stubble grows at different rates and degree of thickness, and so there is not one solution to fit all of these varying factors.
In this review we will have a look at the different types of cream and foam that are available, and then match each of them to the individual skin type. That should help make your choice a great deal easier.
Shaving Cream vs Shaving Foam
Here at the Emporium we are not fans of the tins of foam you find on supermarket shelves. So this article is about using good high quality creams, that will soften the bristles on the face. Foam does not just do that and as such it only helps a small amount, in caring for the skin. They are two different products entirely.
Shaving Cream for Men With Sensitive Skin
Certain of the leading shaving brands are fully aware that some men have very sensitive skin. However what exactly is the definition of being sensitive? If you have ever had a shave and at the end of it your skin feels irritated, most people would conclude that you have some type of sensitivity in your skin.
Please don’t jump to that conclusion right away. The reasons for that could be numerous such as a blunt razor blade, a blade that is too sharp or simply by using a very cheap electric razor. All the hair on our body contains keratin and that acts to protect the hair. A good cream will help break that down when applied.
By using inferior products this will give any type of skin a really bad experience. If however you are using good quality products and you still get razor bumps, redness around the neck, or what is called razor burn, then there is little doubt that you have what is medically termed “sensitive skin.”
You apply this either using a shaving brush, or directly on to the hand and then rubbing on to the face. This particular one is allergen-free and has been specifically formulated for men with sensitive skin. (Top Tip – hide this one from your partner or it will disappear quicker than a flash)
If you are someone who suffers from any type of shaving rashes, or indeed have acne prone skin, then you really will not find a better shaving cream on the market today. Now I know this is more expensive than buying one of the cheaper versions, or buying shaving foam or gels in a tin, but this one works.
It gives you that much needed protection and moisture to your face, which in turn makes for a kinder shave and no red marking, razor bumps or irritation. We think that is a price worth paying.
Best Shaving Cream For Single Edge & Double Edge Safety Razors
If you have decided to use a safety razor, then congratulations because we think that is one of the best shaves that you can ever have. It does however necessitate putting a razor blade against your skin. If you are going to do that then you need to be sure that your stubble has been softened, the hairs raised upwards for cutting, and that your skin is both protected and moisturised.
To do that always rinse first with warm (not very hot) water. You then need to apply either a shaving soap or a cream. As you are reading this article you probably prefer a cream. This means using a good quality cream and then making sure it has been properly lathered up. The only real way to get a great lather is to use a shaving brush. Badger hair is best for that but synthetic brushes also work. You can do this by hand but it will never be as good a a lather as you can create with a good stiff brush.
There are various well known shaving brands on the market.
Best Shaving Cream Brands
- Taylors of Old Bond Street
- Proraso (Italian Company)
- Truefitt & Hill
- Jack Black
These are in our opinion the leading brands that make high quality creams with no additives. There are of course other brands such as:
- Palmolive Shaving Cream
- The Real Shaving Company
- Bluebeard’s Revenge
This is not an exhaustive list, but with our many years of experience, we tend to stick with the first four mentioned. We have little doubt that all the creams on that list are very high quality, and we would recommend trying them out to see which you like best. Many of the guys here use Sandalwood from Taylors and others prefer Proraso.
You will notice that these contain no parabens, silicones or any type of artificial colouring, unlike the so called shaving foams and gels that come in those tins. Those type of foams and shaving gels use surfactants which act as a foaming agent. The creams that I am recommending here contain none of those.
I have made a quick comparison below.
Best Shaving Cream For Men | Sensitive Skin | Safety RazorsPlease note the information contained in this table was correct at the time of publishing. The average ratings and price points can change each day, so always check to be sure. The average rating score used is from actual Amazon buyers, where they rate products on a maximum score of 5 stars.
These will without any doubt be the best shaving creams to use if you are using either a single edge safety razor or a double edge one.
Best Shaving Cream For An Electric Razor
Many of the modern day electric razors can be used for either wet or dry shaving. We have been asked quite a few times which cream is best to use for these. One of the main purposes of deciding on using an electric razor is of course time. We would always recommend using a high quality cream and lathering up as you do for a normal razor blade wet shave. Some men don’t use any type of cream at all with an electric shaver as it can get messy and make the heads of the razor clogged up.
Hopefully this article has helped you out and made your choice easier. If you are starting out we would recommend going with something like the Prorarso as your first cream. It is high quality and will give you a great shave.
Best Shaving Cream for Men With Acne
If you are in your late teenage years, or you happen to suffer from adult acne, then you need to try and avoid any type of those cheap foam in a can type of products. Those are actually packed full of ingredients that can really irritate and annoy the skin. The reason the manufacturers put those in there, is simply to preserve the shelf life of their products.
Our advice is not to put them anywhere near your face. Any of the products on our list above are free from those ingredients and will cause you no other types of skin problems. We have completed a more detailed article for acne sufferers, which you can read by clicking right here. That article is packed full of useful tips.
