How To Use Shampoo the Right Way

It is all to easy to believe, that washing your hair is not rocket science. After all you have been doing it for a while. As a small child, most likely your parents would have washed your hair. From memory, that was not always the best experience, and shampoo in your eyes, is just never a pleasant experience.

What most guys never really ask, is are they doing it the right way? You may have noticed that when you go to a decent barber, or hairdresser, that they actually do it the right way. They use good quality products, and it is not something that is rushed.

Below, we have shown you a step by step method to ensure that your hair is always washed and conditioned properly.

how to shampoo your hair

Step 1 - Rinse Your Hair Thoroughly

Just like washing your car, you should always start by thoroughly rinsing your hair, with no shampoo. The purpose of this is to make sure your hair is wet, and it also quickly removes and dirt, wax or gel from your hair.

An important step as the hot water also opens up the skin cuticles on your scalp, and that alone can help promote healthy scalp growth.

Sticking your head under the shower for 5 seconds doesn't cut it guys. Take your time and make sure the hair is completely soaked, and that the hot water has had time to do its work.

Step 2 - Treat Longer Hair

If you have short hair, then you can skip this step. However, if your hair is long, then a great idea is to apply a little conditioner, to the longer ends of your hair.

Longer hair tends to be at its weakest, at the ends or tails of the individual hairs. It is worth just a few seconds to give them a little extra treatment, before applying a shampoo.

Step 3 - Applying the Shampoo

This is the part that most people get completely wrong. You do not need to apply half a bottle of shampoo to work up a great lather. A dollop of shampoo in the heart of your hand is plenty.

Massage that into the scalp as that is the most important part to clean. You will always find that the hair closest to the scalp, will be the dirtiest, and also where most oil gathers.

That is where you should focus your efforts. The longer parts of your hair also need a little shampoo, but don't overdo that, as that is also where your hair is the weakest.

Step 4 - Time & Pressure

Again most guys get the actual application style wrong. Circular motions are a really bad thing, as they twist and tangle hair, and that damages it. You should use vertical strokes on your scalp, as that type of application, stimulates a better blood flow in your scalp.

It is that blood flow that encourages strong and healthy hair growth.

Step 5 - How Many Shampoo Applications?

One. Yes I know that many men use two applications, mainly because that is what they were taught to do. Applying two doses of shampoo removes the natural oil in your hair, and that is not a good thing. Without oil your scalp dehydrates, and your hair can  become dry and brittle.

Like any process however, there are a couple of exceptions. You can do a couple of applications if your hair is really dirty, or hasn't been washed for a few days.

Step 6 - Should You Use a Conditioner?

Yes you should. When rinsing off shampoo, there is no need ever, to squeeze the life and death out of your hair. Rinse it off with hot water, and just make sure the lather has been removed.

Then apply a good quality conditioner, starting at the hair closest to the scalp and gently working out to the ends of your hair. Never apply conditioner directly on to the scalp.

Leave it on your hair for as long as you can. Normally I will shower and rinse the conditioner off at the end of the shower. The longer it is on, the better chance it has of moisturising your hair.

Step 7 - The Cold Rinse

The final stage in the shampooing process is the cold rinse, if you are brave enough. I always finish my shower with a cold blast. In terms of your hair, this helps close the cuticles, and seals the moisture in to the outer layers of your hair.

Step 8 - Drying Your Hair

This is not a battle between your towel and your hair. You should never vigorously dry your hair, by attacking it with a towel. Watch what the ladies do, and they do that for a reason.

Ideally wrap your hair in a towel, and allow the towel to soak up most of the water. Then finally pat your hair, until it is dry enough to use a hair drier, or to brush or comb out.

Hard rubbing with a towel breaks and damages hair, and also gives split ends. It can also cause your hair to start falling out.
