Best Hair Wax for Men
There are so many choices in the market right now for hair wax and the shelves are packed with different hair styling brands. Here at the Emporium we wanted to try and make those choices easier for you. There are two things that you need to consider when it comes to buying the right styling wax and they are:
- Your hair type
- The actual look that you want
Now as I am as close to bald as you could ever imagine, there would be little point in me offering you any advice on this. Therefore I asked my daughter who is a hairdresser, and I also asked many of the guys here at the Emporium, who actually use these waxes, how all of this styling actually works.
Back in the day, all we ever had to do was add a little Brylcreem and we were good to go. Things have changed a lot since then.
Understanding Your Hair Type
Just add to that mix those with frizzy hair styles, dry hair and you can see just the many different types of hair that guys have. The thicker or wilder your hair is, then it will need a lot more control.
Likewise if you want a soft natural look (often referred to as a messy look), or a much tighter hold, then the type of wax you will pick will be important to get the right look for you.
So as you can see there are a number of variables and we need to look at those, and also what are the best styling waxes available for each hair type and each style that needs to be achieved.
What Wax Is Available?
When I was out doing my Christmas shopping I was actually surprised when I saw how many different styling products were available for guys. Clearly the popularity of using these is on the increase, and competition in this market looks to be pretty fierce. That of course is always good news for consumers.
Here is a short video of a guy doing some styling using a good quality wax.
He does have pretty thick hair and as he states it is classed as “stubborn” so needs quite a bit of work to get him his desired style. He is using a product called Redkens, which seems to be a popular choice for many guys. That said, it is not the most popular and most guys seem to go with this one.
TIGI Bed Head For Men Wax
Depending on where you actually buy it, the cost is around £11-12 for a 75 gram tub of this wax. It suits both thin and thicker hair and gives a medium hold. That is probably why this product is one of the best sellers as it seems to tick quite a number of boxes. It contains glycerin, Carnauba and Bee’s wax for their different holding properties.
A lot of guys tend to stick with hair gel rather that dip their toe in the water with a styling wax. It would seem from all the different reviews that gel users, who give this one a try do tend to become converted to using this product. The beauty is that with this type of moulding gum a little really does go a very long way.
There are plenty of other brands out there like Dax Wax and VO5 but this one seems to work the best for most hair types and styles. One product that looks really well is the Moosehead and it seems to get decent reviews as well. The VO5 on the other hand gets pretty poor reviews so looks like one to give a miss.
American Crew is also a popular product with many men. A lot of men who make the transition from a hair gel over to a wax instantly notice the difference in the actual look their hair gets. As most reviewers have stated it moves from an oily look to what they describe as a “matte” look, which is of course a lot more fashionable and trendy.
Guys who have naturally oily hair and also use gel know only too well that it can easily go wrong. That is why many of them are making the shift to a wax. Now of course there are still oils in any of these wax styling products, but it is not as intense as what you normally find in gel type products.
What To Look For In A Styling Wax
Any wax that you buy needs to have certain features that will work best for you so we have listed those below:
- Scent: It is going to be on your hair all day so you want it to be a nice scent, not over powering and something that you can live with all day long.
- Hold: You want something that will last all day. You will of course want to avoid any product that starts off ok but quickly wears off to leave you looking like a floppy rabbit.
- Over Oily – Most guys want a wet look but without that really oily or over sleek appearance – yes admit it you have seen the guys who look as if they have dipped their head in a chip pan full of oil
- Taking it out – The part that many guys forget about. At the end of the day you will want to wash this right out of your hair. Some waxes are a great deal easier to get rid of than others.
If you can find one that ticks all of the above boxes, then it is probably going to be a winner. Out of the many hundreds available the TIGI does seem to be a very popular choice and quite a few of the guys here at the Emporium also use this as their product of choice when it comes to a hair styling wax.
